July 4th

Yesterday marked the anniversary of the declaration of indepence of the United States of America. As families most celebrate with the fellowship of friends, a few burgers and drinks, and sparkling fireworks. A wonderful feature of the holiday for families is the opportunity to spend time together, making memories and being among friends. The memories we create with our families and the conversations we have are foundational and powerful.  However, the more nuanced dimensions of the holiday often create a challenge for families, namely what does it mean to be patriotic; what does it mean to be an American. For instance, how do we teach our children to celebrate a nation that champions freedom and democracy while objectifying torture and staying apathetic about homelessness and poverty? How do we share with our families a fondness for our nations original values while struggling to reckon with its actions throughout history? If nothing else, let’s make sure to join the conversation and engage our families in an ever-evolving blueprint of what it means to be both Christian and American.
